We present a simple and effective enrichment of charged analytes in a purely aqueous system with the aid of an electric field.The enrichment was achieved by electrophoretically concentrating the analytes from a large volume of water sample into a small volume of electrolyte that was trapped inside a micropipette.A range of anionic and cationic compounds(e.g.,inorganic ions,herbicides,dyes,drugs,and surfactants)was concentrated using a simple experimental set-up.Cations or anions were selectively or simultaneously concentrated.The concentrate was directly compatible with liquid phase analytical techniques,therefore,eliminating additional steps in sample preparation such as evaporation and reconstitution.Enrichment factors of more than two orders of magnitude were achieved and the approach was applied to fortified drinking and river water.
