Synthesis and Characterization of Melt Processable Acrylonitrile-N-Vinylimidazole Copolymers

  Polyacrylonitrile(PAN)and acrylonitrile(AN)-Nvinylimidazole(VIM)copolymers(abbreviated as P(ANco-VIM))with various feed molar ratios were synthesized by free-radical solution copolymerization in dimethyl formamide(DMF).FTIR and 1H NMR results revealed that P(AN-co-VIM) could be synthesized successfully by free-radical solution copolymerization.DSC results showed that the decomposition temperature of P(AN-co-VIM) shifts continuously to higher temperatures with VIM comonomer contents increasing.XRD results showed that the crystallinity and crystallite size decreased obviously with the increase of VIM contents.P (AN-co-VIM) is melt processable as VIM content is higher than 10 mol%.
