Current studies on rockfill structures mainly focus on continuum mechanics; however, there are relatively great differences between the deformation of continuum rock and rockfill structures because rockfill is a discrete, granular material. In this study, a three-dimensional stochastic granule model with polyhedral shapes is presented using a combined finite/discrete element method. The individual rockfill granule is treated as a discrete, deformable continuum body and modeled by the finite element discretisation with linear or nonlinear constitutive model. The inter-granular interaction is simulated by the contact conditions using discrete element method.Numerical examples are conducted and the movement and deformation processes of rockfill granules are also described. The numerical results agree well with the laboratory test results.Based on the combined finite/discrete element model a computer program code is successfully developed. The advance of the method is to capture the true mesoscopic characteristics of rockfill materials compared to FEM or DEM.
