Long-lived emissive electronic excited states of transition metal compounds have profound impact and applications in diverse areas including solar energy conversion reactions, molecular and biomolecule sensings, and optoelectronics.Transition metal ion plays a pivotal role in the generation of long-lived emissive electronic excited states via spin-orbit coupling effect and metal-ligand coordination.Spin orbit coupling induced by transition metal ion facilitates the intersystem crossing from excited singlet state to corresponding lower energy triplet excited state and at the same time the decay of the triplet excited state to corresponding singlet ground state via spin forbidden radiative decay process.Metal ion would also affect the non-radiative decay of the emissive excited state by imposing rigidity to the metal-ligand coordination framework.
