  Typhoon Nari (2001) developed from a tropical mesoscale convective system (MCS), and underwent erratic movements with two loops, and variable structural and intensity changes in the vicinity of the Kuroshio current but over the nearly same ocean surface (i.e., within about 500 km range).It also had a long history of about 21 days (i.e., September 1-21), and tracked from offshore of Philippine to Taiwan and Guangdong provinces with two landfalls.Its environment was characterized by anomalously warm SST, a midlevel trough superposed on a split subtropical high, a quasi-stationary low over the Gulf of Tonkin, the approaching of Typhoon Danas (2001), and several traveling disturbances in the midlatitude westerlies.In Yang, Zhang and Huang (2008), we have examined the role of topography in producing record-breaking rainfall (e.g., 100 cm in 24 h) and strong winds after Naris landfall over Taiwan island using a 108-h cloud-resolving simulation ending 0000 UTC 19 September 2001.Wu et al.(2008) showed how Naris variable intensity changes were affected by its looping tracks ascross the Kuroshio current.
