Cellulose is the most abundant biopolymer on earth and of immense commercial value.Cellulose microfibrils (CMFs) are crucial for plant morphogenesis, as their nascent orientation is thought to determine the direction of cell elongation.They are produced by cellulose synthase (CESA) complexes, which are nano-machines embedded in the plasma membrane that spin out the CMFs into the existing cell wall, using the force of the production of their own product, the CMFs.CESA complexes are produced in the ER, embedded in the ER membrane and trafficked to the plasma membrane via the Golgi system, after which they are inserted into the plasma membrane.
