Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) is are a group of highly complex persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and ubiquitously present in the environment.Spruce needles have been previously used for the monitoring of atmospheric POPs as passive samplers [1,2].It is thought that SCCPs in the vapor phase can be trapped in the waxy epicuticula of spruce needles,while particle-associated SCCPs are deposited on the needle surface.In this study,we investigate the spatial distribution of SCCPs in spruce needle samples from sampling sites of seven different districts and one blank sample in Beijing.SCCPs were found in all samples.The results showed that the SCCPs were in the range 383-717 ng﹒g-1 on dry weight (dw) basis in needles with an average of 527 ng﹒g-1 dw in the central city area.The highest level of SCCPs (717 ng﹒g-1) in needles was found at site F.Site A is located at the city periphery suburbs and has the lowest concentration of SCCPs (250 ng﹒g-1).The ten and eleven carbon chain homologues with six and seven chlorine atoms were the predominant SCCPs in needles.
