Effect of wetting intensity, carbon and nitrogen addition on N20 and CO2 fluxes from forest soils

  Incubation experiments were done to study the effect of carbon (glucose) and nitrogen (NH4Clnd KNO3) addition on nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) fluxes from a mature broadleaf and Korean pine mixed forest(BKPF) soils and adjacent white birch forest (WBF) soils under two wetting intensities (55%and 80% WFPS). The results showed that nitrogen (N) addition enhanced soil N2O emission and dissolve organic nitrogen (DON) content, but decreased CO2 fluxes from the both soils, regardless of the types of N added (P<0.05). Glucose addition promoted N2O and CO2 fluxes from the both soils, especially at the early stage of incubation. Moreover, the addition of glucose increased microbial biomass carbon (C) and the ratio of microbial biomass C and N in the soils, and thus probably changed the microorganism compositions in the soils. Compared to the BKPF oils, N2Ofluxes from the WBF soils were more sensitive to glucose addition. Stepwise regression analysis showed that relationships existed between fluxes of wetting-induced N20 and CO2 and soil properties.
