It is well known that nanocrystallization can significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. The earlier work in our group has released that nanocrystallization remarkably influences the properties of the passive films on stainless steels [1-3].The passive film on sputtered nanocrystalline stainless steel coating possesses different morphology and composition as comparing with the conventional coarse crystalline stainless steel. The small grain size improves the element diffusion, which leads to the different composition of passive film. The small grain size also changes the surface condition, which influences the ions adsorption. All of which increase the corrosion resistance of stainless steel.
