  The superior performance of columns packed with core-shell particles, evidence by an impressive reduced HETP of < 1.5, is no doubt a major break-through in modem day liquid chromatographic separation column.The reason for this impressive performance has been largely attributed to the fact the particles has a partially diffusive permeable layer that significantly reduces the B-term of the van Deemter equation.Specifically, the impressive narrow particles size distribution has also largely been responsible for the trans-channel contribution, a critical element of the Eddy diffusion contribution to band broadening.Others have claimed that the roughness of the commercially available core-shell column imparts greatly the packing quality as such result in small trans-column velocity biases within the packed bed[1].
