Novel high Curie temperature piezo-/ferroelectric single crystals of BiScO3-Pb(Cd1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3(BS-PCN-PT)ternary solid solution of complex perovskite structure, with compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary(MPB),have been grown by two different methods, namely the high temperature solution growth(HTSG,or flux method)and the top-cooled solution growth(TCSG).Both techniques have lead to crystals of ttypical crystal sizes of 2-8 mm with a rectangular shape and dark green color. The crystal structure is analyzed by means of powder X-ray diffraction. The polar domain structure and local polarization switching behavior were studied using piezoresponse force microscopy(PFM).The alternating current(AC)conductivity and dielectric properties of the single crystals were measured between-150 and 400℃.The Curie temperature of 0.35BiScO3-0.05Pb(Cd1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.60PbTiO3 with a tetragonal symmetry was found to be about 402℃ by means of dielectric measurements. The remnant polarization(Pr)was 51 μC/cm2 with a coercive field(Ec)of 45 kV/cm.The piezoelectric coefficient d33 and electromechanical coupling coefficient(kp)were found to be about 110 pC/N and 0.5,respectively,for <001>-oriented tetragonal crystals. The high TC and large Pr together with the good thermal stability of the BS-PCN-PT single crystals make this material a promising candidate for high temperature piezoelectric applications.
