Cell lines are renewable and constitute an invaluable resource of central nervous system cell types for studies of news therapeutical agents against diseases of CNS.We have determined that flavonoids extracted from Brazilian plants,Caesalpynia pyramidalis (agathisflavone),Croton betulaster (casticin,apigenin and penduletin) and Dimorphandra mollis (rutin) can interfere on cell proliferation and viability,and induces neuronal or glial differentiation in human GL-15 and U251 glioblastoma cells,human SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells,rat neuron-glia co-cultures,and in embryoid bodies (EB) derived from mouse embryonic stem cells (mES).It was demonstrated that flavonoids were not toxic to any lineages at the concentrations adopted and protected neurons to death (casticin).The compounds were able to induce a dose-dependent inhibition of cell proliferation in neuroblastoma and glioblastoma cells.
