It is commonly acknowledged that the development of gout is a multi-step process, ranging from asymptomatic hyperuricemia, acute gouty arthritis, intercritical gout to chronic tophaceous gout [1].Almost 80% of patients after the first gout attack will suffer a recurrence within 2 years [2].With the accumulation of uric acid and the deterioration of the disease, acute attacks might become polyarticular in chronic gout period.Furthermore, the attacks will be more common and tend to last longer and become progressively worse. Therefore,we can conclude that one of the important characteristics of gout disease is its recurrent attacks and no rule to follow.Uric acid as a single evaluation indicator for clinical diagnosis is insufficient to satisfy versatile properties of the disease. In this work,a new strategy, called graphical index of separation (GIOS) [3] were developed to select the important metabolites from the serum sample in order to understand metabolic changes induced by gout disease based on metabolic target analysis. The most significant difference of GIOS for the selection of variable is that the importance of one single variable is not influenced by the inclusion or exclusion of another variable from all variables.
