Commensal caridean shrimps were identified through extensive surveys in reef zones, especially from sponges, hydroids, sea anemones, hard corals, soft corals, gorgonians, crinoids, and sea urchins,in the coastal areas of the northeastern Taiwan.Twenty-nine species belonging to 19 genera and 3 families were identified(3 were identified to the generic level).More shrimps belonged to family Palaemonidae(68.97%)than to Alpheidae(20.69%)and Hippolytidae(10.34%).Most symbionts associated with hard corals(16 species;47.1%).Nine shrimp species are common in this area(occurrence > 60%).Ten species—1 Alpheidae and 9 Palaemonidae species—were identified for the first time in waters of Taiwan. This study provides the supporting taxonomic account of commensal caridean shrimp inhabiting the reef zone in northern Taiwan.
