In China, developing close and personal social networks is a way of starting a new business and enhancing efficiency of business. This close and personalized relationship in China is called guanxi.Guanxi generally can be understood as the social relationships or connections that based on mutual interests and benefits (Yang,1994).It refers to a very special type of relationship that combines the connections among people through the exchange of resources such as favors and obligations. Some researchers agree that guanxi is a unique form of interpersonal relationship under the Chinese cultural background (Hou,Zhu,& Bromley,2012).The origin of public relations became a modern profession began in 1903 when Ivy Lee acted as consultant for advertisement.Modern public relations in China can be traced back to 1979 when Chinese government decided to open domestic market to west. Many multinational corporations were attracted to entering China with the hope of exploring market and gaining profit.Public relations departments were set up to help multinationals handle communication within local culture. In China, public relations was or still is linked to the term "guanxi",which means the practice of building personal connections like guest relations in order to conduct some duties in unethical manner (Hung,2002).Chinese public relations industry is facing fast-changing identity, social values, legitimacy and public recognition under unique political, economic and cultural contexts (Sriramesh,2004).However,there exists limited literature of current Chinese public relations situation and causes of the formation. Therefore, this research aims to analyze current public relations situation in China through conducting online survey of public relations practitioners from different cities and public relations organizations. This paper is the first stage of understanding public relations conduction in China, which followed by in-depth interview and participant observations in the future study. After the analysis of online survey and observation data,it could provide a basic concept and explanation about the present status of public relations in China.
