Molten metal infiltration is an important fabrication method of carbon fiber reinforced metal matrix composites. But the surface of desized carbon fibers would be damaged easily as they are directly used in the fabrication of composite wires. So the desized carbon fibers must be pretreated before wire production. This paper deals with the formation of SiO2 coat on carbon fibers by plasma chemical method and sol-gel method.T300 and TF700 were chosen as test fibers. The silica sol was prepared through using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS),H2O,HCI and CH3CH2OH by sol-gel method. The mass ratio of TEOS/CH3CH2OH /H2O/HCI/was 20/18/1.8/0.25.SiCl4 was used by plasma chemical method. In the plasma chemical reaction,SiCl4 could be transformed into SiO2 coat on the carbon fibers. The power of plasma equipment can be controlled in the range of 2-5 watt. The test results showed that the SiO2 coats on the carbon fibers were easy exfoliated from the carbon fibers by sol-gel method. In plasma chemical test the SiO2 coat did joint with T300 carbon fibers, but not with TF700 carbon fibers. It was also discovered that the SiO2 coat quality was controlled by the power of plasma and the flow rate of plasma gases. As the power of plasma increased and the flow rate of plasma gases increased, the coat surface became smooth.
