Telomeric regions in various organisms comprise guanine-rich 3end overhangs of few hundred base pairs which can form G-quadruplex structure under in vivo conditions.Besides, G-rich regions are reported to be prevalent in promoters of human proto-on-cogenes, HIV-1 genome and open reading frames of viral mRNAs.Induction and stabilization of G-quadruplex DNA structure in such regions have evolved as a promising strategy in anti-cancer/anti-viral drug discovery.Palmatine, a protoberberine alkaloid, used in traditional Chinese medicine is a good nucleic acid binder and cell cycle blocker.
