To remove the deficiency of the numerical solution of the mass conservation-based soil-moisture equation in a regional climate model, a revised numerical algorithm of the Richards equation, which subtracts a constant hydraulic potential with a corresponding lower flux boundary condition, was implemented in the RegCM4 regional climate model with its land surface component CLM3.5 in this study.
