Secondary metabolism and morphological differentiation in the model fungus Aspergillus nidulans and A.flavus is controlled by the conserved global regulator VeA.The presence of VeA is necessary for the biosynthesis of sterigmatocystin(ST),a carcinogenic compound, which is the penultimate precursor of aflatoxin(AF).A revertant mutant(RM)able to synthesize ST intermediates in the absence of VeA in A.nidulans was identified.
