The control and monitoring of water quality is recognized as a key issue globally in protecting and improving overall human health and safety.For this reason, the possibility of obtaining fast, accurate and reproducible results, while offering increased analytical throughput, represents a technological breakthrough of extreme interest in the measurement of toxicity.Short term toxic effects (15-30 min) of environmental samples, such as drinking, surface and marine water and wastewater effluents, are commonly assessed by a bacterial assay based on the bioluminescent properties of marine microorganisms.This is accomplished by combining specified volumes of the test sample with the luminescent bacteria suspension in a test tube and measuring the inhibition of light emission.
