As a fully biobased and degradable polymer, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) draws increasing research interests and seems a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum-based polymers. However, the application of PHBV has been rather limited by its poor thermal stability which narrows the window for thermal processing and sluggish crystallization rate which inhibits high-speed melt-spinning and high-quality injection molding. In this work, PHBV was blended with poly(lactic acid) (PLA), another major type of biobased and degradable polymer, and melt spun at relatively high speeds (500~2500 m/min).In addition, PHBV was filled with high concentration (30~55 wt%) bamboo short fibers and successfully injection molded. On the one hand, the crystallization of PHBV was improved by the addition of PLA or bamboo fibers; on the other hand, PHBV showed unique rheological properties which enhanced the flow behavior of both PHBV/PLA and PHBV/bamboo blends.
