We have developed a facile method for the visual detection of metal ions (such as Cu 2+,Co2+,Ni2+ and Pb 2+) by using photonic colloidal crystalline (PCC) microspheric beads. The PCC micro-beads were fabricated from the orderly three-dimensional packing of core-shell nanoparticles with hydrogel coatings laden with anionic phosphate functionalities.
