Spinach downy mildew disease, caused by the oomycete pathogen Peronospora farinosa f.sp.spinaciae (Pfs), continues to be a major production constraint for commercial spinach (Spinacia oleracea).However, based on cooperation through the International Working Group on Peronospora (IWGP), spinach seed companies,and various researchers, a considerable amount of information has been learned about the genetics of resistance, the race diversity of the pathogen, and how to breed for more durable resistance to the downy mildew pathogen.
