药物安全性是临床应用药物的基本属性。由于安全性问题，许多候选药物在开发阶段就面临失败，同时也有许多上市药物被迫退市。药物安全性通常在临床前和临床试验阶段才进行实验评价，然而，体内和体外的实验评价既昂贵又费时，一些慢性毒副作用还很难在短时间内通过实验确定。
