  Rutin,a kind of secondary plant metabolite and flavonoids compound was extracted from traditional Chinese medicine and used as an analgesic and antipyretic.It also exhibits excellent antibacterial as well as antioxidant properties.Mitochondria are involved in several cellular processes,from regulation of cell death to signal transduction.Mitochondrial dysfunction has been frequently associated with human diseases including cancer.This work aimed at to assess the effects of Rutin on the permeability of H+(Fig.1)and K+,membrane potential,membrane fluidity,respiration and swelling of mitochondria isolated from the rat liver(Fig.2)[1-3].The results suggest that Rutin could inhibit Ca2+-induced mitochondrial swelling,it could also induce the mitochondrial membrane potential collapse.Rutin induces a decrease of the fluidity of mitochondrial membrane.
