The A.thaliana genome harbors six BASS genes(Sawada et al.,2009.The bile acid/sodium symporter 2(BASS2) protein is responsible for the transport of pyruvate into chloroplast in the MEP pathway(Furumoto et al.,2011).The transport of pyruvate was blocked, making atbass2-1 more sensitive to mevastatin, the suppressor for mevalonate(MVA) pathway.Since BASS2 pumps sodium ions into the chloroplast along with pyruvate, its contribution to the plant response to salinity stress raises an interesting question.
