This paper is based on the 1983 master thesis of Yi, Jeong Duk.It observed and described the changes taken place in agrarian labor with the introduction of new technology in rice farming during the mid 20th century in Korea.The traditional agricultural technology changed greatly by the introduction of agricultural machines such as water pump, power tiller and rice mill and new technology such as new breeding methods, fertilizers, weedkillers, and so on.The impacts of new technology are as follows: the total labor hour and amount are reduced, all the labor processes through rice farming seriously changed, the way to mobilize labor changed from the traditional mutual exchange of labors (Pum-at-e) and the cooperation of same labor processes to the hire of laborers with money and the cooperation with different labor processes because of the development of the division of labor caused by the introduction of new machines, and all processes of rice fanning started earlier usually by one month.However, the peasants get more debts and depend more on the outside.
