Production of multifunctional nanoparticles with the ability targeting tumors, providing molecular imaging and meanwhile, delivering therapeutic agents holds great promise for improving the survival of cancer patients.We have developed several types of multifunctional nanoparticles that are targeted to cellular receptors highly expressed in most human cancer cells as well as tumor stromal cells.Biodegradable magnetic iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles are conjugated to tumor targeting ligands such as the amino-terminal fragment (ATF) of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA), single chain antibody against the epidermal growth factor receptor (ScFvEGFR), or affibody to Her-2-Neu, resulting in uPAR, EGFR or Her-2/Neu targeted IO nanoparticles.
