In view of its recognized potential in the improvement of as cast quality of slab,the interest for electromagnetic devices in slab casting has been steadily increasing over the years.By the application of electromagnetic devices for stirring and/or braking in the mold,the surface and subsurface quality of the slab is greatly improved.Various casting conditions with respect to cast qualities,casting velocities and cast dimensions require,however,different electromagnetic approaches with regard to technical solution to achieve best possible result.Casters with low throughput normally require a stirring(AC)function while casters with high output require a braking(DC)function.The challenge has been to design an electromagnetic device which is versatile and flexible in achievingthe best quality improvements within a broad range of throughput.
