The breakdown of xylan,a major component of hemicelluloses,was confnmed to be associated with the activity of microbial xylanase.In the paper,the 66 actionmyces obtained by isolating from dozens of decaying wood,debris and soil samples of different parts of China with corncob xylan as the sole carbon source,all degraded xylan and produced evident xylan hydrolyzed circles.Among them 10 high xylanase producing strains with xylanase activity more than 100U/mL,were selected in shake flasks.Xylanase activities of the 10 strains were confirmed to be high and steady through fermentation.
