Each region of the world has its unique population health issues, yet there are challenges that are global in nature. As life expectancy increases-a trend that will continue with increased globalization of trade and the resulting movement of many developing countries populations toward economic middle class status-so does the median age of the worlds citizens. The median age in 1970 was 22.1 years. In 2010, it was 29.1.With advanced aging come an increased incidence of chronic illnesses and a greater demand for healthcare services. As utilization rises, healthcare systems are coping with the challenge of paying for care and still maintaining robust, growing national economies, and maintaining a high level of healthcare quality while minimizing disparities.Addressing these challenges requires defining 21 st century healthcare in terms of the level of resources devoted to wellness and disease prevention;the proper and necessary role of innovation in treatment, medical technology and biopharmaceuticals;and whether healthcare should be viewed simply as a cost or as an economic stimulant.
