A flexoelectric layer, in which the polarization is induced by the strain gradient, is respectively laminated on a cantilever beam and a simply supported cylindrical shell to monitor dynamic states of natural modes.Due to the distinct property of flexoelectricity, the polarization or voltage signal in the transverse direction is independent of the distance between the sensor and the neutral surface in the beam case. This characteristic is also observed in the cylindrical shell case.Analysis suggests that the total transverse voltage signal is contributed by two bending strain components, namely the longitudinal bending strain and the circumferential bending strain.
