Diet has been identified as a key target in achieving improvements in cancer control. We have shown that diet increases immunosurveillance mechanisms against breast tumourogenesis by controlling the growth of mammary carcinoma in mice. The modulatory effect is achieved through an anti-inflammatory mechanism, mainly by IL-6 decrease. The cytokine, IL-6 is a potent promoter of malignant features of breast cancer.Indeed, IL-6 in the serum and the mammary gland was shown to be decreased in mice that had received probiotic or bioactive peptide and correlated well with the regression of the tumour.IL-6 was shown to affect the epigenetic regulation.Although these observations lend support to the hypothesis that controlling IL-6 level and the epigenetic pattern thru dietary factors, they will lead to the strong control on breast carcinogenesis.
