Objective: A patients Quality of life is influenced by different factors. The purpose was to study Factors Influencing Quality of Life on women with breast cancer. Methods: This was a quasi experimental study at the time of diagnosis and followed after six months. All the new cases (172) of breast cancer detected during the study period in 2006-2008 from the Department of Surgery at Lok Nayak Hospital, Delhi were interviewed by using a questionnaire.Statistical Analysis of data was expressed in proportion. Results: The mean age of subjects was 46.99 years. At the time of diagnosis, the mean scores for overall QOL as well as in all the domains were lower in younger age group than middle and older age group, showing positive association between age and overall QOL.After the treatment, there was decline in the overall QOL and in all the domains across all the age groups but it did not show significant difference. At the time of diagnosis, the mean overall QOL score was higher for Muslim subjects (6.23) as compared to Hindus (6.01).at the time of diagnosis, the mean overall QOL score was higher in the subjects who were aware of breast cancer. After the treatment, the mean overall QOL score of the subjects who were aware of breast cancer (5.25) was lower than that of subjects who were not aware (5.57).Overall QOL was directly proportional to number of children at the time of diagnosis and was inversely proportional, after the treatment. Before treatment, the mean overall QOL score was higher among subjects residing in urban areas as compared to those residing in rural areas. The same pattern was seen across all the domains.A significantly lower QOL score was observed for overall QOL and social well being domain of subjects residing in rural areas (p<0.05).The mean overall QOL and all other domains had lower scores for stage Ⅳ subjects as compared to stage Ⅰ at the time of diagnosis as well as after treatment. The mean overall QOL score was lower among subjects where the delay (Gap in consultation) was more than 10 months as compared to those where it was < 3 months at the time of diagnosis as well as after treatment. There was a significant negative correlation between the total expenditure and the overall QOL(r=-0.154, P<0.05) and the psychological (r=-0.177, P<0.05).After treatment, it was seen that there was a significant positive association only in spiritual well being domain (r=0.194, p < 0.05).Conclusion: At the time of diagnosis; the mean scores for overall QOL as well as in all the domains were lower in younger age (-3d40 years) group than others. The difference was statistically significant for overall QOL, the psychological and the social well being domain (p<0.05).After the treatment, there was decline in overall QOL and in all the domains in the age groups though difference was not significant.
