To begin with，I wish to say how much Iappreciated being invited to thisconference, but then，to express my deep regrets at being unable to attend，due to illness． I am at the moment in a fourteenth—century French village—about the right period but completely lacking any Chinese resources，even a dictionary！ I therefore apologise for writing a short and very general comment on Huang Gongwang’S Fuchunshan ju tu（富春山居图），entirely in English．If anyone is trying totranslate it，I offer them both my thanks and my sympathy．
