Hydrocarbon trap(HC trap) which reduces hydrocarbon emissions from vehicles was prepared from nonwoven composite medium consisting of layers of non woven textile and activated carbon.Activated carbon was impregnated into nonwoven layers with sandwich type and the layers were thermally bonded each other with no use of chemical binder to adhere layers, indicating the effective use of activated carbons surface pore area to adsorb the emission gases.The composite medium was pleated to increase the filtration area and fabricated into a certain rectangular form.The properties such as hydrocarbon gas adsorption capacity, pressure drop, dimensional stability and so on were evaluated It shows high butan working capacity of above 11 g, low pressure drop of 3.98 kPa and high dimensional and chemical stabilities at severe temperature cycles and oil/fuel exposure.This hydrocarbon trap prepared could be effectively used into the gasoline-powered passenger cars.
