Background: There have been various methods to evaluate the treatment results of cleft lip and palate (CLP).However, it is best to evaluate its treatment results after all the treatments have been completed. We developed a palatoplasty technique using mucosal grafts (MG technique) and the patients treated by the technique have gone through final operation and old enough to be evaluated for the final results. So we proposed a tentative evaluation standard and applied to the patients. The standard is whether dental occlusion has been completed with natural teeth alone and without orthognathic surgery.Materials & Methods: Between February 1984 and February 199o, a total 30 UCLP patients underwent palatoplasty using MG technique. The alveolar cleft was closed using cleft margin flap(CMF) at the time of cheiloplasty.Secondary alveolar bone grafting (SBG) was performed in all the cases but one.Among those, 21 cases (male13,female8) who visited our hospital regularly until they have come of age were included in this study. We investigated how many patients gained their final dental occlusion with their natural teeth alone and without orthognathic surgery. Results: All the cases gained good dental occlusion with their natural teeth alone. There was only one case in which orthognathic surgery was required. But the case was skeletal class Ⅲ prognathism and his maxillary growth impairment was very slight. No major complications such as marked maxillary growth impairment, velopharyngeal incompetence, or oronasal fistula have been encountered.Discussion & conclusion: So far, there have been few evaluation methods of final treatment results of CLP.In order to live up to our tentative criteria, 1)no marked maxillary growth should be encountered,2)alveolar cleft must have been treated properly including success of alveolar bone grafting and 3)orthodontic treatment should also be successful.Together with good final treatment results of MG technique, we conclude the tentative standard we proposed is both viable and useful in evaluating the final treatment results of CLP.
