Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-I) is the etiological agent of the disease acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) that has created a global pandemic. The present strategy for the treatment of HIV infection is the Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy (HAART) that is based on a combination of reverse transcriptase and protease inhibitors.Although, the introduction of HAART has dramatically reduced death from AIDS-related diseases it is often not well tolerated and leads to drug resistance warranting the discovery of novel therapeutic strategies.
