Pathobiological characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma mainly refers to the biological behavior s which are closely related with the histopathological features, including tumor ceil differentiation, growth patterns, proliferative activity, invasion and metastatic potential, postoperative recurrence risk, prognosis and the corresponding gene and protein expression.Obviously, pathological and biological characteristics of hepatocellular carcinoma are the important guidance in making clinical individualized treatment mode and improving the longterm survival. Before the 1980s, because liver surgery in China has not yet been widely carried out, the specimen numbers of hepatobiliary tumors are small with single types of tumors, it is difficult to accumulate experience of pathologic diagnosis of large series of cases, even a little biological indexes for the diagnosis of pathology. In 1990s, especially in the first ten years of 21st century, liver oncology research becomes one of the most active and influential disciplines.During the last 30 years between January 1982 to December 2011, 40,656 surgically resected hepatobiliary tumors have been diagnosed in the Department of pathology of Oriental Hepatobiliary Surgery Hospital.Right now, the histological classification of primary tumors and tumor-like lesions of hepatobiliary system has been increased from less than 30 kinds to more than 100 species at the present.
