SOLAS research is an expanding field in Spanish marine and atmospheric sciences.Ongoing activities include: 1) Assessment of the sources and sinks of CO2 in the Atlantic and Antarctic Oceans - a contribution to CARBOOCEAN,and measurement of the drawdown of anthropogenic CO2 from ships of opportunity (IIM-CSIC-Vigo,ULPG-Canarias); 2) Study of the role of ecosystem metabolic balance and hydrography in controlling air-sea CO2 fluxes, particularly in the subtropical N Atlantic (IEO,U.Vigo,U.Oviedo,ULPG-Canarias,IMEDEA-CSIC-Mallorca); 3) Study of the effects of aerosol deposition, planktonic metabolism,UV and organic matter on the air-sea exchange of CO2 and O 2 (IMEDEA-CSIC-Mallorca,IIQAB-CSIC-Barcelona,ULPG-Canarias); 4) Measurement of the air-sea exchange of organic C as a major component of the C flux between the ocean and the atmosphere (IIQAB-CSIC-Barcelona,IMEDEA-CSIC-Mallorca); 5) Study of the biotic and abiotic factors that control the oceanic emission of DMS at multiple scales, from single-cell biogeochemistry of microbes to satellite views of the global ocean (ICM-CSIC,Barcelona); 6) Study of the contribution of DMS emissions to aerosol formation at regional to global scales, using satellites and modeling (ICM-IIQAB-CSIC,Barcelona); 7) Study of the role of air-sea interactions in the transport and fate of persistent organic pollutants (including their entrance into food webs) at regional to global scales (IIQAB-ICM-CSIC,Barcelona); 8) Study of Trichodesmium and N 2 fixation in the tropical Atlantic: physiology, biogeochemistry and environmental forcing (U.Vigo,IEO).
