Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M.Smith.leaf was extracted with 95% ethanol to obtained a crude antioxidant extract. This crude extract was fractionated by solvent partitioning into ethyl acetate soluble acidic (AE) and neutral fraction (NE) and aqueous fraction (AQ).The antioxidant activity of crude extract and each individual fraction (AE, NE and AQ fractions) was evaluated through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-l-pic-rylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity assay and compared to standard antioxidant such as ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and butylated hydroxyltoluene (BHT).In DPPH scavenging assay showed antioxidant activities with IC50 (50% Inhibitory concentration) in AE fraction was the highest antioxidant activities at 10.062 ppm, followed by crude ethanol extract (14.119 ppm), AQ fraction (21.868 ppm) and NE fraction (49.238 ppm), respectively, while IC50 of the standard antioxidant ascorbic acid and BHT were found that 51.547 ppm and 8.659 ppm, respectively. The results obtained suggest the use of E.elatior leaf as a potential source of natural antioxidants.
