The electrocaloric effect(ECE)is the adiabatic temperature change and isothermal entropy change caused by the polarization change of a dielectric material, when subjected to a change of external electric field.ECE is the inverse effect of pyroelectricity. The ECE has a great potential in solid-state cooling devices as an alternative to the currently used vapor-compression refrigerators, which reject green house gases, not benign to the environment. The sol-gel and solution-casting methods were used to prepare the(PbLa)(ZrTi)O3(PLZT)ceramic thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate and poly(vinylidene fluoride – trifluoroethylene)68/32 mol%copolymers films.
