Canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT) grows progressively by producing high concentrations of TGF-β to depress NK cytotoxicity and to evade T cell attack through low MHC expression.However, during the late progression phase, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) secrete high concentrations of IL-6, which is proven to bea potent antagonist to TGF-β.IL-6 then restores the suppressed NK and IFN-γactivities.During this stage, IL-6 works together with IFN-γto efficiently promote the MHC expression up to 40% of the tumor cells.The restored NK cytotoxicity is involved in the killing of the rest of the 60% of tumor cells that still lack the MHC expression.These mechanisms drive the tumor to regression.
