The atmosphere is widely recognized as a major source of Fe in the form of iron-containing dust.We sampled ten dusts from strong dust storm source regions and one dust from coastland Qingdao. This study provided the experiments in which the impact of dust (<20μm) on the growth rates of three single species of Yellow Sea: one green alga, one diatom, one dinoflagellate in different marine environments (coastal sea and ocean area) was assessed under laboratory conditions. We cultured algae using coastal water from Qingdao and ocean water from West Pacific respectively. We found the growth of algae in ocean water was more obvious than that in coastal water. So we thought strong dust storm may be very helpful to stimulate the productivity in ocean area because dust storms may bring not only nutrient but also iron which are very poor in the ocean area close to large dust source. We found that the dust composition was very important factor that affects the absorption of nutrient and iron inside dust.Clay was easy to absorb than sand.We found the effects of the dust from different source regions were different. The effect of the dust from strong dust storm source regions on the growth of phytoplankton was more obvious than that from coastland.
