To understand the deep-sea characteristics of marine fouling communities off Xisha and Dongsha Islands in the northern South China Sea,an investigation was conducted.A submersible buoy system was moored for 12 months at northwest of Xisha Islands at a depth profile of 1667 m (Station B6).Another was deployed in waters east of Dongsha Islands and exposed for 2 months at a depth profile of 1223 m (Station B9).The fouling samples were collected from the sediment trap (about 410 m below sea water surface),float and the kevlar rope.At Station B6,only the hydroid Obelia sp.was found and its wet biomass reached 1286 g m-2.As for station B9,the float at depths of 15-30 m was mainly colonized by the pedunculate barnacles Lepas anatifera and Conchoderma hunteri with density reaching 3822 and 922 individuals m2,respectively.The biomass of L.anatifera reached 2882 g m-2 but that of C.hunteri was only 71 g m-2.At the depth of 35-50 m,the kevlar rope was completely covered by C.hunteri.The density of C.hunteri was high at 26,893 individuals m2 and its biomass reached 10,189 g m2.Moreover,factors affecting the distributions of fouling organisms are discussed.
