Anhuis Southern Ideal City is the first in a series of developments that represent a custom-designed industrial development model conforming to efficiency goals mandated by the Chinese government. The 430 hectare site is located in the centre of the Anhui Jiangnan Industry Zone start-up area and comprises industrial, commercial and residential uses.As part of the planning work, sustainable industries that drive economic development have been selected for the site and include new materials, eco-industry focused research and development and sustainability services. The site seeks to become a low-carbon community which is energy efficient and transit oriented which can function both as a home and workplace. The plan includes a public transport system with 98.7% site coverage, a tram system that will satisfy internal transport demand and integrated bus terminals and light rail. These transportation system elements help to create multi-modal transit possibilities and seamless transfer between different transportation modes.A model was developed to assess potential emissions from the site and it was found that industrial land uses account for 45% of total carbon emissions.Energy use accounts for 73% of total emissions with 62% originating from electricity use alone. The model output shows that energy efficiency for electricity consumption and generation efficiency are key to achieving reduction goals, in addition to optimisation of industrial operations.Assessment shows that the site has the potential for twice the carbon emission reduction required by Chinas 12th 5 year plan.
