  ZrB2/W muitilayers have been synthesized with different modulation periods in an magnetron sputtering system at room temperature.The extensive measurements that include x-ray diffraction,profiler,nano indenter and tribometer were employed to investigate the influence of modulation periods on microstructure and mechanical properties of the multilayers.Experiment reveals that almost all multilayers possess higher nanohardness than the rule-of-mixture values of the monolithic ZrB2 and W coatings.At modulation period of 23 nm,multilayer with mixed polycrystalline texture exhibited the highest hardness of 41 GPa with lower stress.Meanwhile,the tribological properties and fracture resistance of multilayer are also been improved.The nanoscaled coatings had clear multilayered structure and good modulation period.The polycrystalline structure and multilayered modulation structure were directly responsible for the enhanced mechanical properties.
