The efficiency of a transmission is effected by the sum of its components.Even a small part such as a seals can help to reduce the torque loss if designed correctly.Friction losses, seal rotation, mechanical and thermal deformations can be determined by means of analytical and numerical calculations.Such computations give valuable hints for an optimised design.Power losses of such seals can often be reduced by more than half using appropriate macroscopic face features which provide a hydrostatic or hydrodynamic load reduction.High temperature resistant plastics are superior to grey cast iron as a sealing material in terms of power loss and power rating.While the operation limit of seals from grey cast iron is determined by adhesive wear, plastic materials can be used until their surface layer softens significantly.
