Carbon dioxide (CO2) has a great significance to industry and plays a special role in environment protection.A high pressure CO2 vessel rupture during storage, transport or handling may lead to devastating CO2 BLEVE accidents. In order to learn the critical excitation condition and the developing process, the physical properties of CO2 and the mechanism of a typical CO2 BLEVE were analyzed based on the existing theories. It is found that CO2 is a specialnon-flammable fluid with one supercritical area and the SLT (Superheat limit temperature) temperature is 270K (2.9 MPa).Furthermore, the possible consequences ofa CO2 BLEVE were also summarized. The quick and considerable increasing of the flashing liquid volume and the expansion of the previously existing vapor will result in a strong pressure wave and propulsion of fragments from burst vessel. For a 40-L steel bottle containing more than 95 % liquid CO2,the overpressure might be 48.6kPa at 10m far from the explosion center and the initial velocity of the fragment will be 108.8m/s.Large scale tests and laboratory experiments are needed for more accurate internal mechanism study and consequence evaluation.
