A novel ruthenium-catalyzed dehydrogenative β-alkylation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines with aldehydes has been demonstrated,1 which enables assembling a wide range of 3-alkylquinolines in a straightforward manner in moderate to excellent yields upon isolation.Interestingly,the formed products do not undergo benzylic oxidation,thus offering the potential for further elaboration of complex molecules.Associating with the importance of the obtained compounds in synthetic,biological and material chemistry,the method presented herein has the potential to be frequently employed for various purposes.Further investigations applying the dehydrogenative coupling strategy in creation of other heterocycles are ongoing in our laboratory and will be reported in due course.
